Musk could shut down the foreign influence ops any time he wants. They operate with his blessing.

Yes, absolutely. He could also make a new rule on the platform stating that your stated location must match the location where you are operating from but we’ll see if he takes any of these steps.

It helps him obtain his goals by keeping the foreign accounts running. The goals are not mutually exclusive.

While scary and uncomfortable, this is also pretty glorious. The optimist in me hopes it will wake up a few people. Thanks for the great work, as always, Caroline. xo

Me too, Sandra. I think this has at least made it impossible to deny that there is a problem and that’s a pretty big step given what we’ve been dealing with for several years now. Thank you for reading and your insight as well. I appreciate you.

Who's to say that the foreign account is not being paid by actors within the US.

Caroline Orr Bueno, PhD's avatar

That could certainly be the case. But it would still be for an influence, albeit domestically funded.

Something tells me that Musk might turn off this accidental feature pretty soon.

Musk turned off the country location when it blew up. Why is the question that needs to be asked of him. Even if we already know the answer.

“Or perhaps even more likely, these types of tactics never actually stopped in the first place.”

We know this to be the case. Many social media and tech companies - Meta, OAI, Google - report publicly influence operation campaigns they find on their platforms, many of which target the US. Covert influence operations indeed have continued since 2016 and there’s plenty of evidence.

I'm sure this regularly occurs across all SM, including TikTok. My FYP regularly receives strange pro-Trump postings, oftentimes from accounts with pretty women as the front, that look AI generated. SM have got to do a better job verifying accounts.

Unfortunately, nowadays the AI generated images looks more real than an authentic photo. But as written in the article, sometimes they also use photos of real women who have no idea that their photos are used on social media.

However, I agree... I've seen clearly AI generated women spreading "information".

This should've been addressed and dealt with a decade ago even before 2016. I've tried to warn Americans in my microsphere of Pittsburgh, PA, which is where I've lived from 1997-2016 every second of that two decades time, of republican party of USA's praises of putin, when I stumbled once briefly on a tea-party's forum, already in ca. 2014. I thought FBI and CIA etc... were up on the task of monitoring that phenomenon so one me didn't have to contact them to tell them what my eyes saw nor to do their jobs.

By summer of 2016 while still working on formalizing my Naturalization, tRumputinmania of western Pennsylvania was so sudden, shocking, unbearable to me and having not seen the rest of my family for two decades, I emotionally succumbed to my mother's phone call implorings to go for the very first and only time to region of former yugoslavia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, to visit them; had I had an option of another i.e. third better country to immigrate to such as Canada, that's where I would have gone, but at that time that option wasn't there.

then, in nov. of 2016, tRumputin "won" and me knowing he&his kkkult were quisling psychopaths and traitors, I was not willing to go back to a such an already unrecognizable USA. Btw. I had contacted the American Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and informed them several times in full details and honesty of course of my entire case as I tried to preserve my Legal Permanent Status of USA and formalize my Naturalization.

So now I'm neither here nor there so to say, would have immigrated to Canada but now as of this 2025 even Canada is under tRumputin's threat of invasion.

Over here in region of former yugoslavia - the criminals milorad dodik-aleksandar vucic&their regimes are the terrorist putin's of kremlin agents. The EU and NATO countries have called for their arrests but unfortunately the governments of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia still don't have the will to arrest the criminals milorad dodik-aleksandar vucic so it's all handled weird - I've stopped watching any ex-yugoslavia's region media because it's a totally deadlock situation and it affects my health.

I know one thing - the source of all this evil is in terrorist putin's kremlin-regime-system-greater russianist mafia. What in my entire life I never thought would happen is - that USA would allow itself to get infiltrated by them.

This makes me wonder how GROK would respond if asked if Musk had known how many foreign actors he supported?

This revelation humanises the fragility of trust in our digital commons, where voices can be masks.

A tool meant for transparency suddenly unveiled deception, showing how easily belonging can be forged.

Accounts draped in patriotism were revealed as distant echoes, speaking from shores far from America.

The memory of 2016 lingers, reminding us that manipulation thrives in silence and repetition.

What feels most human here is the ache of betrayal, words that seemed familiar now ring hollow.

Yet exposure is also a light: it allows us to see the fractures and name the shadows.

It insists that vigilance is not paranoia but care, a way of protecting shared dialogue.

The danger lies in cynicism, in dismissing every dissenting voice as foreign and false.

Still, the act of unmasking restores agency, reminding us that truth can be reclaimed.

Ultimately, this moment humanises democracy itself: fragile, porous, but worth defending with clarity and courage.

Ist doch ein alter Hut. Online = Unbekannt.
